Cat in the Mirror
The other nite my cat, Cali, jumped from the bed to the dresser. There she discovered something miraculous, well at least to her, or maybe it was just confusing.
For whatever reason, it seems Cali discovered the mirror on the dresser and started looking at it. At first, it was like, "who is that thing in the mirror and what is it." She was probably wondering how another cat got in and how was Cali going to protect herself.
Cali is a bit of a scared y-cat. She jumps at the least thing and is always running away, especially when she doesn't get her way. I was very interested to see how she was going to handle this new thing in the mirror.
She looked right at herself and then looked back at me. I was laying on the bed, not moving cause I didn't want Cali to run away. She moved a bit on the dresser and sure enough the other cat moved too. Cali kind of looked at me with that "what's going on" look on her face. But she bravely moved again and so did that thing. It was interesting to see how Cali keep looking at herself in the mirror and excepting that other cat. Did she know it was her or did she think is was something else? I don't know much about the psychology of cats other than they are very independent and do things on their own time and style and to heck with the human that lives with them.
The staring, moving and staring kept up for a few minutes. Then as if she figured it all out, Cali jumped from the dresser and was off to other things in the apartment.
Interestingly, a day or so later as I walked into the bathroom, Cali jumped up on the counter and looked in that mirror. She seems interested in what she saw and moved back and forth on the counter looking at the mirror. After a few minutes, she jumped down and was off again.
Since these episodes, I occasionally see Cali looking at herself in the mirror on the dresser or the bathroom counter. I guess she has come to accept that image and has even laid on the dresser and just looked at the image for a few minutes. I wonder what goes thru her mind as she looks at herself. At least she has come to accept the image and is OK with looking at it every once in a while.
I really must read some more about cats and what they think.
